Despite being more upfront with the Seidur Magic, mysticism, and the unique plot of Vikings visiting the Americas...the book was not what I expected. I personally didn't like the fact that the Spirit Power of the People of the Songtrail and Asson were portrayed as inferior to the Norse Magic. (Spoilers) I was very disappointed when it was revealed that Asson wasn't the one who summoned the lighting to destroy Thorak's Seidur sword but Thyra was. Also I didn't like the fact that Asson was a incompetent shaman, who couldn't handle the power of Vethild's staff, Eyr. The rest of the People books written by the Gears portrayed powerful and legendary Dreamers and shamans (Wolf Dreamer, Tall Man, Nightshade, Rumbler, White Ash, Still Water, Sternlight, Dune, Poor Singer, etc.) that can go toe to toe with either Vethild or Thorak. The plot and characters are awesome though but that aspect of the book really disappointed me personally.

This novel is steeped in history, religion, secrets and war. The time of the Danelaw is ending. As the Christian faith spreads, many are forced to convert, or die.Now with King Cnut, Athelred the Unready and Alfred, fighting for the Crown of England. One is searching for a powerful Seeress, that had been exiled, to a strange land, 12 years earlier. Those who want her and her power, will stop at nothing to get to her, or her grave. Now her daughter Thyra, is heading to the same land, with only vague memories, of her 'other mother'. Her power and knowledge grows along the journey..We also meet The People of the Songtrail, they are Inuit. They have had dealings with the Norseman before. Children stolen,, loved ones killed. Are these Norseman here for peace or war? The truth is far more ominous. This novel has depth, on every side. Each character is well developed. It is written, with the same astonishing expertise, by Kathleen and Michael..This is a whole new chapter in the first People's to visit North America. What a chapter they have written!! I have read it three times, now.Highly recommended

The Gear's do a great job telling the stories of Native Americans. I did enjoy this book, but I wasn't excitingly overjoyed with it. I think most of that is due to me not knowing the history of the time this story takes place. In other books, the Gear's have provided a non-fiction introduction to provide the reader a background of the events, and how things were, that are in the book. This one didn't explain enough of the worldly events so that I could understand the motives of the characters. Still a wonderful story and I do appreciate all the research work the Gear's do. I enjoyed Godi, but he had so many titles, at times it got a little confusing as to when he was being spoken about by others. I would recommend the book, it is an interesting tale of two faiths and two peoples and they intertwine with each other.

While I appreciate the premise of what the authors were attempting to communicate, I believe that there was not enough time spent on the Songtrail people, too much on the Norse, and a rather poor ending.Their other First Americans books in general provide great character development, cultural details, and a good story set up by great writing.

It started slow at first, then it was hard to put down. Once again as with all the other books I was sucked into the story and experiencing the storyline. So sad I have to wait so long for another book to come out, but it is worth it!

The Old World meets the New. The Spirit World meets the all too human race. Evil meets good, in some cases in the same character. This is a wonderful story woven around the incredible clash of cultures that must have taken place when the Vikings met the Natives of what came to be known as North America. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if we met aliens from outer space? I'm thinking it must have been something like that. Yet this book presents hope that some of them may have found common ground. This book kept me coming back until the end.

Most stories of Native American/European contact tend to be depressing. This one had its moments, but showed that friendship could be more powerful than racism and brutality. I came to love many of the characters, especially as the good guys from both races started working together. The use of magic was not really my thing, and Thyra's "ivory-colored hair" was definitely mentioned a few too many times, but overall it was a very enjoyable read.

As always, I love the books written by the Gears. Their knowledge of ancient history of the natives ofNorth America is a wonder to me. The characters in their books always quickly become my friends (or enemies), and when I finish a book, I always have to immediately read it again. I have all of the books they have written together in Hardback, paperback, and now in Ebooks! I shall continue to read their books, and hope they never stop writing!
