I'm sorry, much as I like travel memoirs, this one failed to entertain me. Subjectively speaking, It lacked a certain "lightness of being". It seemed somewhat self-centred, and there was nothing much about friends and flatmate. The endless, detailed descriptions of places in Barcelona became merely boring to me. I missed something in Lacey's writing but it's hard to pin down exactly what. It did not hold my attention. I did not finish the book.
I loved this book. Not only is it the story of a young man's experience learning to live in a new country and learning a new language, but it's also a discovery of Barcelona and the people who live there. Well written and totally absorbing.
Well written and full of colorful characters you can picture in your head. Humorous experience's and heartfelt relationships with the people of Barcelona. Will get tbe second book when it gets finished.
This book is truthful in how hard it is to start over when you don't know the language. The descriptions are amazing and the characters he meets are so funny! Can't wait to read his next book!

A lighthearted read that I enjoyed!
This is an absorbing memoir about the author’s journey of self-discovery, in his late twenties, as he ventures out on a new life in Spain.It had been Vernon Lacey’s dream to live overseas and learn a new language. This book takes us through the first years of him achieving that dream. It is not an easy journey and there are obstacles in his way, but he overcomes these with grit and determination.The story is told with a great sense of humour. It includes vivid descriptions and a depth of feeling that transport you to join Vernon in a life of discovery in Barcelona. There is a great mix of stories from his time teaching at an International school, exploring his new environment and detailing his many social experiences. Some of the most amusing anecdotes involve his learning of Spanish and misunderstandings that result along the way.It is not often that I read a book from start to finish with hardly a break. This one was so absorbing that I could not put it down for long before coming back to it. A very enjoyable read that I would highly recommend to all memoir lovers.
