About the Author

Cat Warren is a professor at North Carolina State University, where she teaches science journalism, editing, and creative nonfiction courses. Before starting her academic career, Warren worked for newspapers across the United States, reporting on crime, poverty, and politics, from California to Wyoming to Connecticut. Warren started training her young German shepherd, Solo, as a cadaver dog in 2004. She and Solo were called to search for the missing across North Carolina for a number of years. She lives in downtown Durham, North Carolina, with her husband, David Auerbach, a retired professor of philosophy at North Carolina State University, and their two German shepherds. This book focuses primarily on the author and her cadaver dog, Solo, although it also gives quite a bit of information about other types of working dogs, such as police dogs, bomb-sniffing dogs, etc. Some of the information is fascinating--how does working on water differ from working on land, how long can the scent of a decomposing body stay on a piece of land--but the book is often disjointed and occasionally repetitious. Nevertheless, it's a good introduction to the field.However, the editing is embarrassing for a book by someone who, according to her bio, teaches editing. Perhaps the errors were edited in and Warren was not allowed to correct galleys. But there are errors that should have been caught immediately. For example, "hone" is used instead of "home" at least four times to mean to focus in on something. There seems to be a knee-jerk reaction that "if" calls for the conditional instead of the indicative. In one instance, referring to a situation where evidence was probably contaminated, we read, "If there ever were an uncontaminated scent object with the subject's scent on it, that scent was now possibly in several cans." No need for that. "If there ever was" works quite well in that sentence. Probably there's no sense in lamenting the good old days when publishers cared about their products, but it's sad nonetheless.

My husband found a book for me in a North Carolina Public Library. He knows I love dogs and training dogs. The book he found is called What The Dog Knows, the Science and Wonder of Working Dogs. But when I started reading aloud to my husband on the way home in the car, my husband wailed out loud! "What are you reading?! I can't believe you like that! You won't even watch CSI with me!" And my husband is right. Even though I've worked in an OR, CSI is a little too graphic for me to relish over a bowl of popcorn (just my old-fashioned ways). But on the other hand, What The Dog Knows is written extraordinarily well. I couldn't stop reading it -- it's written by a woman who by chance got a high-energy German shepherd puppy that she thought was going to walk sweetly on a leash. But the puppy was not destined to be a set of adoring eyes that sat quietly under a professor's desk. Due to the puppy's strong energy and extraordinarily inquiring nose, the woman started training the puppy as a cadaver dog. A cadaver dog is a dog that searches for the missing and the dead. So. I've now read the book twice it twice. I even read the "notes" at the end. I bought a hard copy. The book is fascinating! It's written by a prof at NC State who also served time as a reporter. And now she and her dog volunteer as a cadaver dog team. But what really draws me to her and this book is that she writes about dogs from strong experience. And she writes about Carolina like a poet. She discusses research with feet-on-the-ground understanding. She is unhesitating but appropriate when she discusses what it’s like to search for death. And she tramps through forests and Carolina swamps, describes Carolina woods and colors. She trains her German shepherd alongside Durham police in tobacco barns. She knows and respects the extraordinary folks who train and know dogs. By the way, the author's name is Cat Warren. Get it. Read it. Give it to your friends who love dogs, who train dogs, who work in law and law enforcement. They will all love it. It is a keeper of a book.

Cat Warren’s journey into the world of cadaver dogs began with one very bad puppy. She loved German shepherds, just not this one. Solo was a singleton puppy and had grown up without littermates. He didn’t know how to co-exist with other dogs and his relationship with humans was troubled. “He’s just a jackass,” a dog trainer told her, but what he really needed was a job. The search to find a purpose for Solo led Cat Warren into the world of cadaver dogs. Solo had a gift for tracking, and Cat Warren would discover that the two of them would find a purpose by finding bodies. But this is not just a linear story of Cat Warren and her dog Solo. A university professor and former journalist, Warren takes the reader on a journey in every direction and every question that follows from cadaver searching. She explores the history of working dogs and the many ways that dogs help humans search for lost people, drugs, bombs or the dead. But she has little patience for those who would exaggerate and use dogs to boost their own careers. Some have fraudulently used the nose of dogs to convict the innocent, but Warren deconstructs how an alert investigator can uncover the scheme. Warren is precise in her reporting, laying out what is possible and impossible for search dogs. No, a dog cannot track a person months after driving off in a car, but with a recent scent and a trail that has not had heavy cross traffic some amazing feats are possible. Cadaver dogs can help find bodies trapped in a deep lake or in the middle of a raging river. And although the work is grim for many, it is also work that brings closure for suffering families.By the end of this book, you may find yourself starting to understand a little more about how your dog experiences the world.
