Maria DeGuzman's eminence as a conceptual photographer allows her to bring to the subject of Latina/o literature an unmatched sensitivity not only to visual effects, but to the ways in which those effects are produced. Her discussion of Carla Trujillo's work alone would justify reading this book--how she illuminates both the role of the photograph in Trujillo's comic novel _What the Night Brings_ and the importance of the medium (the Brownie camera) for the fictional characters. As always, her criticism offers a model of how interdisciplinary experience, as well as knowledge, informs the best contemporary literary theory and interpretation.
DeGuzman's critical study is a significant contribution to many academic fields of inquiry. Its refreshing approach to Latino/a literature offers an innovative analysis of night as a trope in a variety of Latino/a texts, including photography. This vision will continue to expand the critical conversation in the formation of a Pan-Latino/a identity.
Lima is wrong. This book does not have a potential to be necessary reading; it simply is! Maria de Guzman proves that she is both an independent critic/thinker and erudite--both together rarely found in academia.
