the traditional gallery and museum environment

My P.O.V.(as a french artist and researcher) about this book is :This book is amazing and a must read book for Art lovers, Art critics and Art collectorsIt can be related to the anthropological works of Melville J. HERSKOVITSBrian O'Doherty is a conceptual artist.I think this book will become a collectors item in twenty years as a work of art

bought this as a required book for art history and WOW is it dry (art history) reading. came as promised in great condition, just hate the content

Had to buy it for a class rarely used it not fully impressed

This book has some interesting comments, but it is mostly a boring book to read as are most books about art.

This was one of the most fascinating books I read as an art history student. It provides a concise, simple explanation of the evolution of art from representational illusion to flattened object-ness and finally breaking out into the space of the audience. It's a great introduction to how what we think of as "art" changes, along with our visual perception of it. Although this book was written before the Internet and mobile revolution, it makes you think about we have changed from a world of pretend objects, to a world of objects, and back to a world of pretend or "virtual" thing. It was written pre-Internet, and therefore makes you think about what has happened since the book's history leaves off.
