While this may not be a perfect 5-star romance, it's close enough for me to want to round to 5. The author is perhaps the best new HR writer around as far as her attention to detail and historical accuracy. That's always a huge plus. And the second important component of a historical romance is obviously the romance itself. As I age but still continue to read romance, my preferences on how a relationship is presented continue to change. Not so hot-blooded anymore and much more hormone-deficient, I'm not interested in titillation from written sexual encounters. As a matter of fact, nowadays, if an HR couple needs more than 1-2 pages to go from precoital to postcoital in a sex scene, my attention has wandered off and I skip to the post part.A romance novel has a limited number of pages and I want those pages spent on characters, relationships, romance development and some interesting historical aspects. Mimi Matthews' new novel has the historical and romantic aspects just the way I prefer them in an HR.Heroine Helena Reynolds of London has answered a matrimonial advertisement seeking a wife for a gentleman living an isolated life in Devon. This man is Justin Thornhill, former soldier in India. He needs a wife who can bear solitude, will run his household for him and warm his bed. Helena wasn't the kind of woman he was expecting. She's too genteel, too pretty, too well dressed. Why would she possible want to marry a rather grouchy, gruff ex-soldier with physical and psychological scars?Well, it's because Helena is looking for only two things: security and a little kindness. She wants to be kept safe. Why? What's she running from? Well, all will be revealed in time. And whatever you might be imaging it to be, it's probably worse than that.Whatever Helena may be running from, she certainly ran to the right man. "For Justin Thornhill wasn't only a handsome man...He was a good man. Unutterably kind and steadfast and fiercely protective of everyone in his care...Despite his growls and grumbles." Oh, be still my beating heart. I loved this man. I loved the romance of this story. I loved seeing Helena and Justin together.Bring on the next Parish Orphans book, please. My romance-loving heart is waiting breathlessly.

You have to love those gloomy old homes perched on cliffs along England's coasts. Perfect settings for romance novels. Storms and rumors swirl around the decrepit manors while the H and h get to know each other. Those opening days were my favorite part of this book. The author does an excellent job with the scarred ex-soldier and terrified lady-on-the-run getting to know each other after she answers an ad for a wife.Justin, the H, does his best to hide the burns on his body and Helena, the h, tries to hide her own bruises, caused by the dastardly villains who are on her trail. In lesser hands, this tale could have become a melodramatic mess with chase scenes and lots of screaming, and chains clanking in a horror of an insane asylum.Instead, Justin remains protective and logical, while Helena takes a few deep breaths and trusts him.I admit, I didn't enjoy the story as much once they arrived in London and could never talk or interact alone. I have a feeling that after all this time reading about so many musicales and soirees and balls, I am jaded. Even the thought of lobster patties doesn't move me these days. The ending featured one of my least favorite ploys--the "I must let you go because I am unworthy/scarred/poor/not of your social standing." Probably my reaction was stronger because I had just read another book using the same device. The heroes never ask how the heroines feel. They make a unilateral decision until the heroine says, basically, "Oh, shut up and let's head to the church for a wedding."

Helena Reynolds has come to Devon in answer to a newspaper advertisement for a man seeking a wife. Justin Thornhill, a survivor of the Cawnpore massacre, is looking for some companionship. Both have secrets so this arranged marriage works for them until all the secrets are exposed.I'd just finished The Lost Letter by this same author and enjoyed it very much. This is in the same vein, set in Victorian England, and somewhat based on real events. Ms. Matthews writes lyrical descriptions that bring the settings in the book to life, whether a London drawing room or the windswept cliffs of western England. I drooled over her descriptions of Helena's dresses.Like The Lost Letter, this is a Beauty and the Beast take-off; Justin was tortured in India and bears severe burn scars. I found it interesting that the physical scars didn't bother him so much as the mental torture he endures over his failure to save others swept up in the Indian Mutiny. The first half of the book has a real Gothic feel. I admit a little disappointment that the mad monk or the hidden treasure didn't come up again as the story proceeds. The romance builds as Helena and Justin learn about each other, but then fizzles a bit when they go to London. Helena's story becomes the main focus, and while historically interesting, it didn't engross me quite as much. And I thought they'd got past the lack of communication issue that led to the misunderstanding there; I'd have rather Justin wasn't quite so noble and Helena quite so dim. Anyway, there's a nice ending, and I really did enjoy the story. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
