Part 2 (“Citing Sourcesâ€) covers the need to cite sources and describes the three most popular citation styles in detail, and Part 3 (“Styleâ€) includes the usual rules for spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. Three appendixes include a glossary of grammatical terms, specific tips on formatting a paper, and resources for research and writing. An excellent index provides page numbers instead of the more cumbersome outline numerals. Blue boxes highlight important or helpful tips (“Verbs for Introducing a Quotation or Paraphraseâ€; “Write for Target Readers, Not Your Teacherâ€). Excellent up-to-date analogies and specific examples also make this very user-friendly. The newest MLA style is used (no URLs for material cited from the Web). Williams (1933–2008) was professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago and the author of Style: Toward Clarity and Grace. Together Colomb and Williams are the authors (with Wayne C. Booth) of the best-selling guide The Craft of Research, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

This was a pretty good guide, but it's not easy to adapt to science topics because it tended to use examples that were mostly focused on political persuasion. What if I'm trying to write a research paper on "What is the best algorithm to use for image recognition and why?". Maybe there's more than one right answer for different cases, so there wouldn't be one answer and one working hypothesis, but there would be an exploration of the topic space. In a political discussion, usually writers have one right answer to a social or political question in mind, but writing for a practicing science audience, or writing a "review" article it's more important to tie visits to various areas of a topic into a narrative and I would like to have seen more information on how to do that.
We had to read this book for two of my introductory writing classes at Boston University. While I'd never read it voluntarily or on my own, it was very helpful when it came to constructing essays in college.
