I really enjoyed this book! Volumes that deal with the deep aspects of what it means to be a man or woman have always interested me. In a day and age where relatively small groups are trying to push the idea that gender is only physical and nothing more, these are especially important. This discourse and other like it fully invalidate such arguments and render it powerless.Gordon Dalbey brought up several interesting topics, and views I never considered. I would have given this five stars, except I felt it ran out of steam at the very end of the book. It wasn't clear to me if specific steps to reclaiming one's masculinity were supposed to be presented or not. Maybe I was expecting something out of this book that wasn't supposed to be. Either way, this is a fantastic read that has helped me better understand the deeper details of what it means to be a man.I've read elsewhere this book being described as a more thorough "Wild at Heart" by John Eldredge. I heartily agree and more. Highly recommended for any man, or woman looking to understand men better.
We are all wounded by our fathers in some way. When you are ready to get real about what being a man is meant to be... A true man. An authentic man. A Real Mans' Man. This book will help both sexes because it will give sound wisdom & workings of how a man thinks, what makes him too "clingy & wimpy-codependent", or more often than not, too macho & the "lone wolf.This book changed my life. I agree with a pastor friend of mine who was the head of Teen Challenge for the state of California when he said the following: This is THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK written to MEN outside of the BIBLE".Spoiler: This is a in your "Get in YOUR FACE & GET REAL" type book. Long before Dr Phil made it a popular style of counseling.IF you are still happy playing the all the petty little games-DON'T READ IT, cause you're definitely not at "your personalbottom" yet.When you want to understand your father better, or if you just want to understand yourself better, this book is the "swith" that will turn those dark places into well lit rooms! I have given several copies away * if I had $1000,000 that i could do so, I give them to every man I meet.Ladies, if you need to understand your husband, dad, brother, uncle cousin-this book can be your "Light Switch" into why they are SO NOT EVER going to be "more like you".
Wow ... if there were a six-star option I would use it here. If you are a man, read this book. If you are a wife or mother or in any other way love a man, read this book.Mr. Dalbey, with great credibility, lays out a case that explains why we are so lost as men today. If you don't think you are, but have the courage to explore the possibility, then read this book anyway. Both culturally and personally, the author teaches us why we stumble so easily and then he reaches out and tells us how to begin the process of change for our relationships and communities. It doesn't matter if you are Christian, Jew, agnostic or atheist. If you have a concern for the direction of our families and our culture, if you have a history of troubled relationships, if you lack for male friendships, if you want to break the cycle with your children, (pick your own cycle -- you probably are perpetuating one or more) especially with your son, and equip them to soar in this world, you must read this book. This is not just another psycho-speak, self-help book. Buy an extra highliter. You'll need it.
Our men's group at church are using this book and it makes a lot of good points and things to think about.
Still have not finished reading it but what I have read is very helpful in understanding men. It would be a good Idea for both parties to read before getting married. Bookstores are flooded with books relating to women and their needs/wants but very little addressing men's issues. I really liked his style of writing.
I'd give it ten stars if I could.Start reading the primers like Eldredege & Bly, and when you are ready to move to a deeper level, it's time for Healing the Masculine Soul. To be frank, the title scared me. I knew I was in pain, but the title didn't smack of something a MAN would read. The Lord was patient and brought me to the place where I needed to hear the messages of this work.Careful, Gordon is deep. His sentences are all thoughts that need examination. I tend to think more in streams of consciousness, but this work was good for me. It gives you an understanding of how every man is wounded; How we all need masculine love, even if it is scary to us. It also illuminates that we are all in need of our True Father's touch, love, and guidance.Dalbey I believe was used by the Lord "BIG TIME" in writing this. The premise is that we as men need something and we need to be pointed back to DADDY IN HEAVEN. My wife also found it incredibly healing in the chapter dealing with fathers & daughtersGet it, read it, and let it's God inspired words lead you to a transformation in Masculinity. There's not a lot of better words for men out there, other than sitting in the lap of your Almighty Father, and letting him speak to you.
You don't have to agee with everything to get something edifying from this book. I also beleive it applies to men and women. Whether you approach it from the divine or secular perspective it does address how we may have irratiionally assigned certain roles to people and place them above ourselves and our god(s).I highly recommend it, but I am no theologian.
Awesome book. I have read a few of these. Another one that is awesome just like this is 'fathered by god'. This addresses the missing father syndrome that I felt as a child and I learned a lot about it now that I have two young boys because I don't want to make the same mistakes.
