This is an excellent book for people that care about the environment, sustainable food sources, or those that simply enjoy reading about the High Plains - a place where buffalo belong.The way the author combined his personal experience, history, and science in telling his story made it very interesting. His concern for the dignity of the animals he raised, even in death is commendable. I enjoyed learning about South Dakota, the High Plains, and buffalo.When I got to the end of the book, I wanted to buy some of the meat he raised and was happy to find his website where this could be purchased.
I really enjoyed this read. It was an open an honest telling of a man learning the lessons of creating a life on a ranch in the Dakotas - from his idealized vision of how things would be to the reality of how things should be. I learned about the land, the fauna, and most of all the people who were part of this intimate tale of a man who's vision was adjusted but his principals remained steady. I really enjoyed thegenuiness of learning about the struggeles in cattle and buffalo ranching and the midwest.
This well-written and engrossing book details in memoir form Dan O'Brien's conversion from cattle rancher (which he did only out of a need to make the land he loved something he could afford to keep) to buffalo rancher.The Great Plains need buffalo. They eat grasses native to the area, and don't just pick off the delicacies, unlike cattle. The grasses and the buffalo provide balance to the ecosystem. O'Brien highlights this engagingly. He has a naturalist's background, and can see both the rancher viewpoint as well as that of the environmental science, and he can get this across to the reader, without being preachy. Rather, he's in love, in love with the wide open Dakota spaces. I want to jump in my car and drive west, to see this wild land for myself.O'Brien recounts the history of buffalo, and the much shorter history (time-wise) of their return to his ranch. He draws on the human interest, talking about neighbors and friends, and their own tribulations on the way. He's unpretentious. What he's set out to do is not always easy, not in the initial steps. You find yourself cheering him -- and the buffalo -- on.An excellent book. This is, indeed, my second reading of this book -- I'd purchased it a few years ago and just finished re-reading it. A keeper.
Dan has a great ability to move you into the moment as you read his book. His knowledge of the subject is top notch and helps in the understanding of what is happening in the world around. The humor and story telling is amazing. I have bought 4 of these books so far. I am from South Dakota and live in upstate New York. When people are curious about where I am from I loan this book out. A few have asked to keep the book. I even have placed a copy at the nursing home where I work, and they love the stories when we read from it. Some day maybe Dan and Jerry can make a stop in Owego for a hero's welcome. They love their cowboys out here!!
O'Brien's quest for meaning in life, as defined by his relationship with the land and the animals that call it home, continues here. In his previous novel, Equinox, he explored the dichotomy in his life between the pull of the wild, and the demands of a stable relationship that required more than he was able to give. In Buffalo for the Broken Heart, we find him feeling lost and ruddlerless, both in his personal and financial life, as he struggles to get past a failed marriage and looming financial disaster.As O'Brien gradually comes to the conclusion that buffalo are the logical answer to his dilemma, it becomes clear that they are stand for a balance and wholeness he has been trying to restore to his land and his inner landscape as well. The story, as it unfolds, is full of the personal details of Great Plains life, and the honest self-exploration that make O'Brien's books a pleasure to read. As so often happens, his inner doubts and fears are reflected in the events and lives around him. The weather is unpredictable, farm costs rise, friends go bankrupt, he is beset by worries over the buffalos he has purchased, the list goes on and on until by the end of the novel, O'Brien comes to tenuous terms with his land and his new means of making a living. The buffalo are not the final answer, but it is clear that they have helped him find another piece of the puzzle he is working so hard to solve.
I found out about this guy and his ranch about 6 months ago during a PBS special called the Great Plains.. I really liked how he did things and bought some of his buffalo meat. Since then, I found out he is also an author. I bought this book and was delighted at how well it was written. I'm hard to please as a reader... I get bored easily.. but this kept me interested and intrigued.Anyway, a great book about the story of Dan and his ranch and turning to Buffalo. I really appreciate his viewpoint on people, nature and life. Highly recommended book!
Dan O'Brien is one of the few who walk the walk, and he tells his story of that walk in an honest, compelling, humorous way. I couldn't put this book down, except to get outside to take a hike and see, really see, the nature around me. That's what Dan's words did for me. His passion, combined with his education and experience, draw you to the same conclusions, and his ability to put his feelings and educated opinions on paper simply overwhelms.I immediately went to his website and ordered bison steaks from his company because he made me believe in his vision for the Great Plains. God bless this man and his dreams.
